Icy Beauty - Polar Paintings from the 1800's
Posted January 21st, 2009 by TimJFowlerAdventurers in the 1800's saw the Arctic and Antarctic as remote and harsh, though beautiful places. The South and North Poles were the furthest frontiers of the day and were sought by scores of early explorers. Among those early explorers were artists who preserved the rugged beauty of the poles. Fortunately, we have their images as an artistic record from the days before Climate Change.

Are Sand Dunes the Future of Skiing?
Posted September 16th, 2008 by TimJFowlerOne of the many reasons I love winter is skiing. Well, I just tried another surface for skiing that doesn't need cold weather - sand dunes. While I fervently hope that the snow keeps coming each winter (and I'm working to make sure that it does) I've found a new place to slide on some old skis - The Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve.
I'm definitely no expert, so I went with some new friends who are old hands at sand skiing. From what I've learned the basics of sand skiing are:
Why I Love Winter #3
Posted April 10th, 2008 by TimJFowler"It ain't over until it's over."
Spring in the Rocky Mountains doesn't begin precisely on the Spring Equinox. Winter can hang on for several weeks, especially among the mountain peaks. Snow storms in the spring are a common enough occurrence, yet they still manage to surprise visitors and locals. I love these spring snow storms for the water they bring, the bright white coat they give the mountains and skiing for those willing to hike for their turns.

Snow Sports vs. Global Warming
Posted February 22nd, 2008 by TimJFowlerGlobal Warming is causing temperatures to rise and is disrupting weather patterns world-wide. The Snow Sports industry (skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, ice climbing, etc.) depends on cold winter weather and reliable snowfalls. Given that Global Warming threatens the very existence of snow what is the Snow Sports Industry doing now and what could it be doing to operate more sustainably?
